Once you have tagged an animal with a NAIT RFID tag, you must register it in the NAIT system within one week or before they move off farm - whichever is soonest. Registration links individual animals to tags in the NAIT system so they can be traced. Registration of your animals will also enable them for lifetime traceability.
There are five different ways to register your animals. You can choose the option that suits you best:
Select tags from list
This is the easiest method when you are registering a few animals. This allows you to select the tags you are registering from a list of tags that you have purchased.
Type in tag details
This method suits those registering only a few animals. This requires you to type in the tag numbers manually.
Upload a tag number file
This method is suited to those using an electronic scanner to read their tags. It allows you to download a file from your scanner and upload it to the NAIT system. The file may only include tag numbers.
Upload a CSV file
This method is suited to those registering many animals. You will need some technical knowledge to use CSV files. It allows you to upload a CSV file with animal details to the NAIT system. This file may include all the animal details, not just tag numbers.
Use a paper form
If you do not have access to a computer or the internet, you can meet your NAIT obligations by using a paper form. Paper forms have a processing fee. For animal registrations this is $10 for 10 or fewer animals and $1 for each animal over 10 animals.

How to deregister animals
You can deregister an animal that has been registered by mistake.
- On the 'registered animals' page, tick the box to the left of the tag that has been incorrectly registered.
- Then click 'deregister'.
The tag status will change to 'unused'. If you purchased this tag you will be able to register it again from your list of unused tags. If this tag had a movement made for it, you will not be able to use it for another animal registration.
