If you are taking cattle or deer to an event you must record the animal's movement to that event. You will need to enter the following details in the NAIT system:
- the type of movement (i.e. to or from an event)
- the date of the movement
- the event, and
- the tag numbers of animals going to the event.
The event will be registered with NAIT, so you can simply select the event name, event NAIT number, or the event organiser's name.
The returning movement must also be recorded. This can be done up to four days in advance. If you sell an animal at an event, a movement must be recorded from your property to the event, then from the event to the new owner's property.
If you are organising an event, you are legally required to register the event with NAIT at least three days prior. All participants bringing animals must also be told what the event's NAIT number is. You are not required to be registered with NAIT as a person in charge of animals (PICA), or to record animal movements for the event. Recording animal movements is an obligation of event participants only.
To register an event, call us on 0800 624 843 and tell us the:
- event name
- dates, and
- the organiser's contact details.
School pet days
Schools have no requirements under the NAIT Act. School pet days are exempt due to the small number of animals, short distances travelled and young age of animals involved.
All cattle and deer attending school pet days must be:
- tagged with a NAIT RFID tag, and
- registered in the NAIT system.
You do not need to record animal movements to and from school pet days.
