Slaughter levy halved
28 February 2014
The NAIT slaughter levy for cattle will be halved to 50 cents per tagged carcass from 1 March 2014.
This is a fifty per cent reduction to the current levy.
Group Manager, Programme Design and Farm Operations, Dr Stu Hutchings said, “This levy reduction is a good news story for farmers and demonstrates NAIT’s commitment to reduce costs to farmers as soon as possible.”
A range of industry groups made submissions on the proposal to reduce the levy.
“NAIT’s intention is to only recover what it needs to operate and maintain its systems. This is the second levy reduction we’ve been able to deliver to farmers within 12 months. A full funding review of NAIT will be undertaken later this year,” Dr Hutchings said.
Background Information
NAIT tag and slaughter levy rates were first set on 1 July 2012. Early and widespread adoption of NAIT tagging led to a reduction in cattle levies in March 2013, with the cattle tag levy reducing from $1.10 to 90 cents and the slaughter levy for cattle decreasing from $1.35 to $1.
The cattle tag levy and the $13 Impractical to Tag levy for untagged carcasses at meat processors will remain unchanged. Deer farmers are unaffected by this cattle levy reduction.
